From buzzing Baga to peaceful Agonda, these are the ten Goa beaches worth your time – and what each one is best for.

With a coastline of roughly a hundred kilometres, Goa has a beach for every mood. These are the ten best beaches in Goa, listed from north to south, with a note on what makes each one special.

1. Arambol

A long, relaxed beach in the far north with a creative, backpacker spirit. A short walk around the headland leads to a small freshwater lake just behind the sand.

2. Ashwem and Morjim

Quiet, wide beaches north of the Chapora River with stylish cafés and far fewer people. Morjim is also a protected nesting site for Olive Ridley turtles.

3. Vagator

Dramatic red cliffs, rock pools and Chapora Fort above – one of the best places in Goa to watch the sun go down.

4. Anjuna

Famous since the hippie era for its rocky shoreline, beach cafés and Wednesday flea market in season.

5. Baga

The liveliest beach in Goa: water sports by day, and shacks, music and nearby Tito's Lane by night. A favourite with groups of friends.

6. Calangute

Often called the "Queen of Beaches", Calangute is big, busy and convenient, with every facility close at hand. Our own office is on Calangute Beach Road.

7. Candolim and Sinquerim

Just south of Calangute but calmer and a little more upmarket, ending at the walls of Fort Aguada. An excellent base for families and couples.

8. Colva and Benaulim

The gateway to South Goa's long, pale sands. Colva is popular with local families; neighbouring Benaulim is quieter.

9. Agonda

A peaceful, uncrowded arc of sand with simple beach huts – perfect for doing very little.

10. Palolem

A sheltered, palm-fringed crescent bay that looks like a postcard. Boats leave from here for dolphin spotting and tiny Butterfly Beach.

Staying safe on Goa's beaches

  • Swim only in areas watched by lifeguards and follow the flag system.
  • Avoid swimming during the monsoon (June to September), when currents are strong.
  • Do not swim after drinking alcohol, and keep valuables with you.
