Water Sports in Goa: What to Try, Where and When
Parasailing, jet skis, scuba diving and more – a practical guide to Goa's water sports, the best beaches for them and the season they run.
For many visitors, water sports in Goa are the highlight of the holiday. Most activities need no experience and take only a few minutes each, so it is easy to try several in one morning. Here is what is on offer and how to plan it.
Popular water sports in Goa
- Parasailing: You are harnessed to a parachute and lifted into the air behind a speedboat for a bird's-eye view of the coast.
- Jet ski: A short, fast ride across the waves, usually with an operator riding along.
- Banana ride: An inflatable boat towed by a speedboat – great fun for groups, and you should expect to get wet.
- Bumper ride: A round inflatable tube pulled at speed over the water.
- Speed-boat ride: A quick spin along the shoreline, suitable for most ages.
- Scuba diving: Introductory dives for beginners take place around Grand Island with certified instructors.
- Snorkelling: Usually combined with a Grand Island boat trip, along with dolphin spotting.
- Kayaking: Calm backwaters and river mouths are ideal for a gentle paddle, particularly early in the morning.
Where to do water sports in Goa
In North Goa, Calangute, Baga, Candolim and Sinquerim are the main hubs, with the widest choice of operators. Boat trips to Grand Island for scuba diving and snorkelling leave from jetties near Sinquerim and other points along the coast. In South Goa, activities are available at Colva and a few resort beaches, while Palolem is known for kayaking and dolphin trips.
When do water sports operate?
The season runs roughly from October to May. Water sports are suspended during the monsoon, from June to September, when the sea is rough. Even in season, activities may pause for a few hours or a day when wind and waves are high – always treat the schedule as weather-dependent.
Safety tips
- Use operators who provide life jackets and a proper briefing, and wear the jacket for every activity.
- Tell the staff about any medical conditions. Scuba diving requires a short health declaration.
- Avoid water sports after drinking alcohol.
- Check age and weight limits before booking for children.
- Leave phones and valuables in a waterproof pouch or on shore.
